I began the series Before in 2019 and was thinking a lot about all of the daunting issues facing humanity in this moment. I felt that we were all standing before the great unknown, watching our future unfold before us without knowing what that might be. Environmental catastrophe? Mass migration? Social unrest? Or something more positive - a real consciousness raising and change of course? This series uses layers of prints on thin papers coated in beeswax to express this liminal state we find ourselves in. When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, the work took on new meaning. Beforecould be interpreted as before the pandemic. The closeness of the figures harken to a time when we could touch people, lean in close to a stranger, put an arm over another’s shoulder.
